Kerala assembly sat for largest number of days: Electionwatch |

Among the 5 states going to polls, the Kerala Legislative Assembly sat for the largest number of days (240 days in last 5 years) according to National Election Watch, a Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) initiative. This amounts to an average of only 48 days per year. The state passed 135 Bills during the period. Kerala is followed by WB which sat for 219 days in five years (average of 44 days a year) and Tamil Nadu (214 days in five years with an average of 43 days a year).

Alphons Kannanthanam joins BJP |

Firebrand former bureaucrat and MLA K J Alphons, who rose to fame for razing illegal constructions in the capital in the 1990s, Thursday joined the BJP in the presence of party president Nitin Gadkari. Alphons, who had resigned from the IAS in 2006 and won the Kanjirappally assembly constituency in Kottayam district of Kerala as an independent candidate just 32 days after quitting service, told reporters that he had is joining BJP as he was "most impressed" with the party's development agenda.

Twenty-one candidates today submitted nomination papers for assembly elections. In Pala LDF candidate Mani C Kappan of congress-s and B Vijayakumar of BJP, in Kaduthuruthy UDF candidate Mons Joseph (KC-M), LDF candidate Stephen George (independent) and BJP candidate P G Bijukumar, in Vaikom CPI dummy candidate Pradeep, in Ettumanoor UDF candidate Thomas Chazhikkadan (KC-M), BJP candidate V G Gopakumar and an independent candidate Anish file papers. Karunakaran loyalists upset over denial of seat to Padmaja |

The Karunakaran group in the state Congress has expressed its dissatisfaction in the seat distribution in the party that concluded Tuesday. The group will meet at the house of Padmaja Venugopal, daughter of former party leader K. Karunakaran, to discuss the developments. The meeting will discuss issues including the denial of seat to Padmaja who was being considered as a candidate for Vattiyurkkavu. |

No parole for Balakrishna Pillai: Kodiyeri |

The state government will not approve parole for campaigning for former state minister and Kerala Congress (B) leader R Balakrishna Pillai in the April 13 polls to the Kerala assembly. The law does not allow to grant him parole for campaigning, he said. Pillai had applied for parole citing illness of his wife. Throwing a surprise, the Steering Committee of KC (B), a partner in the UDF, decided to field Pillai in his pocket borough Kottarakkara in Kollam district. Reacting to the news, Kodiyeri said that, the opposition leader and senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy should clarify on the Pillai issue. Chandy himself had said that he will not contest if he is made an accued in the palmolein case.

Chandy, Chennithala, Murali in Cong list |

Kerala Opposition leader and UDF's Chief Ministerial front runner Oommen Chandy, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala and late leader K Karunakaran's son K Muraleedharan figure in the Congress list of 81 candidates for the April 13 assembly polls in the state. The list, drawn up after marathon discussions in Delhi tonight and endorsed by the party high command, was released tonight. Chandy will seek re-election from his home turf Puthupally in Kottayam and Chennithala will contest from Haripad in his home district of Alappuzha. Muraleedharan, who was re-admitted to Congress recently after a five year gap, has been allotted Vattiyurkkav segment in the state capital.

Battle lines drawn in Kerala |

Battlelines have been drawn in Kerala for the Arpil 13 Assembly polls with Congress, the main partner in UDF, also announcing its list of candidates in 81 constituencies it is contesting in the 140-member House. CPM headed LDF is way ahead in their campaign as the Front had already begun its first round of campaign after deciding the candidates and publishing the Front's manifesto last week. Posters and flex boards with pictures of LDF candidates have been put up in all the constituencies while the UDF's election work is yet to start.

Kerala: LDF manifesto promises 2.5 mn new jobs |

Kerala's ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) Tuesday made fresh promises in its election manifesto which include 2.5 million new jobs, rice at Rs.two per kg and hiking of social pensions to a minimum of Rs.1,000. Kerala goes to the polls April 13 to elect 140 legislators. In the past nearly four decades, a ruling government has never returned to power in the state. LDF convenor Vaikom Viswan handed a copy of the manifesto to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan at the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state headquarters here. Viswan said they were going with a new manifesto after successfully implementing most of the promises that were made ahead of the 2006 polls.
